Manuel Berenguel received the industrial engineering and Ph.D. (extraordinary doctorate award) degrees from the University of Seville, Spain. He is Full Professor of automatic control and systems engineering with the University of Almería, Spain. From 2019 he is also Honorary Visiting Professor at University of Brescia (Italy). His research interests include control education and in predictive and hierarchical control, with applications to solar energy systems, agriculture, and biotechnology. He has been Vice-Rector of ICT at University of Almería (2007-2012) and is the head of the research group “Automatic Control, Robotics and Mechatronics” (arm.ual.es, code TEP-197 of the Andalusian &D plan) from 2000. He has participated in more than 60 R&D projects and 30 contracts with companies.
He has been Vice-Rector of Information and Communication Technologies at University of Almería (Spain). He is also the head of the research group “Automatic Control, Robotics and Mechatronics” (http://arm.ual.es). He has been director of 15 PhD Thesis, has leaded 35 R&D projects and grants. He is co-author of 140 papers in journals (58 Q1, 43 Q2). H-index: 41 (google scholar), 31 (Scopus), 26 (Web of Science). He has been member of the board of Governors of the Comité Español de Automática (main Spanish Association in Automatic Control) from 2003 to 2008 and 2012-2016, member of IEEE Control System Society from 2000 (Senior from 2012) and member of the IFAC Technical Committees TC 8.01 Control in Agriculture, TC 6.3.
He is co-author of the books Advanced Control of Solar Plants (Springer, 1997), Control of Solar Energy Systems (Springer, 2012), Comfort Control in Buildings (Springer, 2014) and Modeling and Control of Greenhouse Crop Growth (Springer, 2014). He has been director and co-director of 15 Ph. D. theses in these lines. He is co-author of more than 150 international journal papers, more than 150 papers in international conferences and 4 patents. H-index: 42 (Google Scholar), 34 (Scopus), 28 (Web of Science). He has participated in more than 60 R&D projects and 30 contracts with companies. He has participated in the International Program Committee of 8 international conferences (in one as IPC Chair) and 3 national conferences, where he has been chairman in many occasions. He is reviewer of more than 15 renowned international journals (more than 100 reviews) and from 2013 is adjoin-director of the journal Revista Iberoamericana de Automática e Informática Industrial (indexed in SCI).
He has been member of the board of Governors of the Comité Español de Automática (main Spanish Association in Automatic Control) from 2004-2008 and 2012-2016, member of IEEE Control System Society from 2000 (Senior Member from 2012) and member of the IFAC Technical Committees TC 8.01 Control in Agriculture (2005-2012), TC 6.3. Power and Energy Systems (2005-) and TC 8.4 Biosystems and bioprocesses (2008-) and member of the Coordination and management committee of the Mixed R&D Center CIESOL between the University of Almería and CIEMAT- Spanish Research Center in Energy, Environment and Technology (from 2005) and member of Scientific Committee of IMDEA Energy from 2015. He was the organizer of the XXVII Jornadas de Automática (the annual meeting of the Spanish Automatic Control Committee) in 2006. He collaborates with researchers of foreign universities: Ghent (BE), Politechnika Wroclawska (PL), Brescia (IT), Lund University (SW), Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina (BR), Arizona State University (USA), Chapingo (MX). He has been also Bilateral coordinator at the center level of the Socrates / Erasmus program 2003/2006 with the Universities of Ghent (Belgium), Polytechnic University of Wroclaw (Poland) and University of Brescia (Italy), including the coordination of a Double Title program (Mechatronics for Industrial Automation).
He has coordinated the Doctorate Program in Advanced Computing Techniques at UAL (2002-2004), Doctorate Program in Computer Science (2013-2016) and the Master in Solar Energy (2017-). He is also member of the Academic Board of the PhD Programme – Doctoral Research in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Brescia, Italy, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
He has taught Automatic Control & Robotics related subjects both in the University of Seville and the University of Almería in different University degrees: Industrial Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Industrial Electronics Engineering. He has also participated in several Master and Doctorate degrees: University of Seville, Department of Systems Engineering and Automatic Control (Advanced Control of Industrial Processes 1996/97, Advanced Control of Industrial Processes 2006/07, Predictive Control 2006/07); Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil (Predictive Control 1998/99); University of Almería (Advanced Computing Techniques 1998/99 to 2011/12, Agroplasticulture, informatics and automation in advanced agriculture 1999/00, Industrial computing 2008/09-2011/12, 2014/15, Intensive agriculture and protected crops 1999/00, Agroplasticulture, Agronics and sustainable rural development 2003/04 to 2006/07); National University of Distance Education (Spain): Informatics and Automatic Control (2004/05). Many virtual and remote laboratories have been developed for supporting all these teaching activities. He has participated in research networks related to control education.
